Fitness, health and wellness are about longevity and moving the needle just a touch further each day towards your goals or aspirations. I call this the 1 % method, its a strategy of trying to pursue just small advancements daily, weekly, even monthly.
It’s Pride Month (!), and we couldn't go through June without doing something to celebrate this month of love. ICE NYC is partnering with OUTWOD to host events at BOTH GYMS on Saturday June 24th at 11:30am! It will be a big team WOD-based event. OUTWOD has grown into the largest national initiative for bringing together LGBTQ athletes and their allies to sweat together in a safe, inclusive group fitness environment and to raise funds for local LGBTQ charitable organizations. We interviewed Will Lanier, the founder of OUTWOD to get the backstory of this amazing organization.
First off, how the heck are you feeling now that Regionals is over and you're on your way to The Frickin’ CrossFit Games!?
It feels so surreal. We really didn't expect to make it. We were just there for the experience. It's been about 2 weeks now and slowly finally sinking in and I feel ready. Plus, my body is only now starting to feel back to normal after Regionals.
First off, how the heck are you feeling now that Regionals is over?
I feel really good. It's been really nice to turn down the intensity and take some time off to chill. This was my third year competing as an individual and I walked away on Sunday the best I've ever been mentally; it was really cool to be able to see that growth. I still have gaps that I need to keep working on but I'm really excited to get back to work.
You may have heard the term, “Plant-based” but are you confused about what it exactly it means? I asked Jen to clear up some common misconceptions about the lifestyle, and to explain exactly what the label “plant-based” means. “‘Plant-based’ is often thought of as synonymous with ‘vegan’” says Jen, “But in reality, it’s both a little more, and a little less, than veganism. A plant based diet is what is sounds - a diet focused primarily on foods derived from plants (fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, and nuts and seeds) but more importantly, it focuses on the WHOLE form of foods. So while, yes, Oreos are void of animal products and therefore vegan, they are nowhere near plant based.
Fun little fact: I may have been an athlete for-, well, -ever, but I didn’t buy my first pair of leggings until age 22… 3 months ago. Through my marathon training, rugby career, and olympic lifting days you’d be hard-pressed to catch me in anything other than soccer (or scrum) shorts. And truthfully, I would have been just fine rocking my fading athletic shorts for the rest of eternity… had I not started CrossFit. Suddenly I was demanding A LOT of my workout gear: I needed bottoms that wouldn’t wiggle around on the rowing machine, sag after a running WOD, fall down when I did burpees, suffocated my legs on a lifting day, or bare my crack during deadlifts. After my first week CrossFitting I knew I needed some new gear… and ASAP.
While they certainly recommend balance, moderation, and at least some variety, the fitness coaches at ICE NYC all have their own “personal superfood”, you know, that food they reach for almost daily for the purposes of nutrition, convenience, and habit. As an added bonus, their go-to’s are also delicious and easy, they’d have to be for someone living fitness to want to eat them so often. ICE NYC at Jumby Bay offers guests an upscale training experience with intuitive instruction. However, whether you’re CrossFit convinced, CrossFit still on the fence, or CrossFit clueless (but intrigued), that doesn’t mean that walking through the doors of a box is not scary; trying any new fitness class or regime can be intimidating. I joined CrossFit for the opportunity to make friends with a similar devotion to health and fitness, but I haven’t just made friends, I’ve been welcomed into a family, and I’ve learned just how important camaraderie is to the fitness journey. Here, I share the 3 things I have learned about the relationship between friendship and fitness since joining CrossFit and becoming part of the ICE NYC fam.
After living in New York for almost six months, and only making a handful of friends, I knew that I needed to make more friends and find a pre-established community to become a part of. I also knew that I wanted to pursue a community where I could find a lifting-buddy, swolemate, and person to geek out over flex-pictures with. Now was as good of a time as ever to give CrossFit a whirl.
One of the biggest things that attracted me to CrossFit, besides the opportunity to compete at a high level, was the discipline required to get there. I've always been incredibly drawn to regimes. From an early age I remember following the same sort of routines playing basketball as I do now: I had to wear certain socks, listen to certain music (rap), and go through the exact same warm up.
